One of the simplest ways to get active is to go on walks. The best part about walking is how doable it can be. Walking is low impact on your joints, it’s free, you can do it anywhere, and it can serve as a great time to talk to a friend or walk your dog.

You also get a lot of bang for your buck with a simple walk in the park. According to the Mayo clinic, brisk daily walks can help you:

  • maintain a healthy weight
  • prevent or manage various conditions (including heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes)
  • strengthen your muscles and bones
  • improve your mood
  • improve your balance and coordination

Of course, you will experience these benefits more and more as you walk farther, faster, and more frequently, but it’s okay to start slow! Whether you’re walking around the block, walking around your office building, or walking around your dining room table, the most important part is that you take the first step. Track your steps over time to see how much better this new routine is making you feel!

Staying positive and motivated can have a large impact on your short and long-term results when embarking on the journey to a healthier lifestyle. If you stumble, get up and keep going. Everyone has the occasional day where they fall short, and that is okay. Stumbling one day could even lead to a better day the next.

If things aren’t working well, seek a friend’s help or a support group, or call your Health Advisor for more motivation. With a little help and encouragement, you’ll be surprised what you can accomplish!

Keep your spirits high and know that you are doing great things. This is just the beginning.
